Betsson’s tech chief departs for lottery giant Allwyn

Betsson’s tech chief departs for lottery giant Allwyn

Betsson’s long-serving Chief Technology Officer, Fredrik Ögren, has left the Swedish gambling group. He has been appointed new Group CTO at lottery operator Allwyn, according to an announcement made on 6 October 2026.

The move concerns one of the most central leadership posts at one of Sweden’s largest gambling operators, and highlights how fierce the competition for technology talent has become across the industry.

What has changed

Ögren left Betsson in August after seven years with the company, having most recently served as the operator’s chief technology officer after previously working in several director roles across the group. He spent five years as Betsson’s Chief Technology Officer. During that time he was responsible for steering technology strategy and evolving large-scale platforms to support international growth in multiple jurisdictions, including Betsson’s recent acquisition of the Canadian B2C business of Rhino Entertainment Group.

At Allwyn, he reports to Kresimir Spajic, CEO of Allwyn Digital, and will be responsible for shaping and delivering the group’s technology strategy to develop a more connected and efficient ecosystem. He will work with teams across Allwyn’s markets, including the UK, Greece, Austria and the US, focusing on strengthening technology capabilities and supporting product innovation.

The interim CTO role had previously been held by Brett Cross, who moves into a newly created position as CTO of global lottery and deputy group CTO, reporting directly to Ögren. Before entering gambling technology, Ögren worked at several leading Swedish newspapers, including Dagens Industri and Expressen.

What it means for you

This is fundamentally a leadership change, not a decision affecting licensing or ownership structure. If you hold an account with Betsson AB or any of its Swedish-facing brands, you won’t notice any immediate difference in terms, bonus rules or your Spelpaus connection. The Swedish Gambling Authority licence remains with Betsson AB exactly as before, and all sister sites under the same licence holder still share a single welcome bonus allowance – in other words, you can only claim one bonus per licence holder, regardless of which Betsson brand you play on.

That said, the CTO role is central to how stable and secure gambling platforms are in everyday use – everything from deposits and withdrawals to how quickly technical issues get fixed. Changes at this level usually aren’t felt directly by players, but they reflect how an operator prioritises its platform long-term. If you’re ever worried about your gambling, support is available via Stödlinjen, and you can exclude yourself from all licensed gambling at any time via Spelpaus.se.

The bigger picture

Ögren’s departure is a reminder that Swedish gambling-technology expertise is in demand even outside traditional casino and betting companies. Allwyn is a lottery-led group that has now recruited an executive who spent five years at Betsson, a Swedish company with a footprint across European, African and South American betting markets, showing how mobile senior talent is within the industry. The leadership change comes a month after a new head of responsible gaming was named at Allwyn, suggesting a broader reshuffle of the company’s management team rather than an isolated event.

For Betsson, the move coincides with continued international expansion through recent acquisitions. How the group handles recruiting a new technology chief is worth watching, since the role is crucial for the platforms behind Betsson’s sister sites in Sweden and internationally.
