Responsible gambling
Responsible gambling is about making sure that gambling for money remains entertainment you are in control of. Here we go through the tools that every operator with a Swedish licence must offer, signs that gambling is becoming a problem, and where to get support – for yourself or for someone close to you.
Only gamble with money you can afford to lose. Gambling is never a way to make money or solve financial problems, and over time it is the operators who profit from players’ stakes.
18+ age limit and identification
Gambling that requires a licence may not be offered to anyone under 18, and the operator must be able to verify your age. When you sign up, you give your name, address and personal identity number (personnummer). Your identity must be verified in a secure way, which in practice is usually done with BankID.
All content on Hitta.casino is intended for adults aged 18 and over.
Responsible gambling tools at Swedish operators
Spellagen (the Gambling Act) and the Gambling Ordinance (spelförordningen) set out which tools an operator with a Swedish licence must give you. They are available at every licence holder, whichever brand you play on.
Deposit limits are mandatory
When gambling online, you must set an upper limit on your deposits. The limit is set per day, week and month, and the operator must make sure it cannot be exceeded. If you set your monthly limit higher than 10,000 kr, the operator is obliged to contact you.
A reduction applies immediately. An increase takes effect after 72 hours at the earliest, which gives you time to think before the change kicks in.
Login time limit
You must be asked whether you want to limit how long you are logged in, and if so for how long. Unlike the deposit limit, the time limit is voluntary, but it is a simple way to avoid an evening lasting longer than you intended.
Breaks and exclusion at a single operator
Every licence holder must let you exclude yourself for a fixed period or indefinitely. At online casinos and bingo sites, it must also be possible to take an immediate 24-hour break. If you choose indefinitely, the exclusion can only be lifted once 12 months have passed.
Self-test
Operators must offer an online test in which you can assess your gambling habits. The test is a good starting point if you are unsure what your gambling looks like.
No gambling on credit
Since 1 May 2026, operators may not allow or contribute to gambling being financed with credit. Credit cards must be blocked as a payment method, and the ban covers all kinds of loans – including loans from family and friends. Never borrow money to gamble.
Spelpaus excludes you from all licensed gambling
Spelinspektionen (the Swedish Gambling Authority) is responsible for Spelpaus.se, the national register where you can exclude yourself. Registering there covers all gambling that requires you to be registered with an operator holding a Swedish licence, whether it takes place online, in a shop, at a racetrack or on Vegas machines. During the exclusion, operators are also prohibited from sending you direct marketing.
You choose between 10 days, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months or indefinitely (at least 12 months) and confirm with an electronic ID. Once the exclusion is in place, it cannot be cancelled or shortened.
Spelpaus applies to every licence holder and therefore to all their brands. An exclusion thus also covers a casino’s sister sites, whether they have the same or different licence holders. We explain the registration step by step in our guide to Spelpaus.
Bear in mind that Spelpaus does not cover gambling sites without a Swedish licence. That is one of the reasons we only write about licensed operators.
Warning signs to take seriously
Gambling problems often creep up on you. Some signs worth stopping to consider:
- You gamble for more money or for longer than you had decided.
- You chase losses and gamble to win back what you have lost.
- You want to raise your deposit limit or look for new operators so that you can carry on.
- You hide your gambling or your losses from people close to you.
- You borrow money, put off paying bills or use money meant for something else.
- You feel anxious, irritable or guilty when you are not gambling, or after you have gambled.
- Gambling takes time away from work, studies, sleep or socialising.
If you recognise yourself in any of these points, it is a good time to lower your limits, take a break or talk to someone.
Where to get support
Stödlinjen is a national helpline for people with gambling problems and for their family and friends. You can reach it by phone on 020-819 100 or via chat. Stödlinjen is run by Region Stockholm with support from the Public Health Agency of Sweden (Folkhälsomyndigheten) and is open on weekdays except public holidays:
| Day | Opening hours |
|---|---|
| Monday | 9–19 |
| Tuesday | 9–17 |
| Wednesday | 9–17 |
| Thursday | 11–19 |
| Friday | 9–15 |
Conversations can be held in Swedish, English and Arabic, and interpreters are available for more than 100 languages. You will find the chat and more information on the Stödlinjen website.
If you are worried about someone else
Family members often notice the problems first. Choose a calm moment to raise the subject, avoid accusations and say what you have noticed. Be careful about paying off debts that have arisen from gambling, as this can make it easier to keep gambling.
Stödlinjen also takes calls from family and friends. You do not need to know how serious the situation is to get in touch.
Licensing and supervision protect you
Operators with a Swedish licence are supervised and must follow the rules on deposit limits, Spelpaus and moderate marketing. If you are unsure whether a casino has a licence, you can check it in the Swedish licence register. If you gamble on a site without a Swedish licence, these protections do not apply.
How Hitta.casino approaches responsible gambling
We only write about operators with a Swedish licence, publish no bonus toplists and never describe gambling as a way to make money. Where relevant, we remind you about Spelpaus and Stödlinjen, and our content is aimed at readers aged 18 and over.
Frequently asked questions
Are deposit limits mandatory at Swedish casinos?
Yes. If you gamble online, you must set a cap on your deposits per day, week and month. If you lower the limit, the new level applies immediately, but an increase waits at least 72 hours.
Does Spelpaus also cover sister sites?
Yes. Spelpaus covers every gambling operator with a Swedish licence and therefore all their brands, whether the sister sites have the same or different licence holders.
Can I end Spelpaus early?
No. An exclusion via Spelpaus cannot be cancelled or cut short before the period is over. Fixed-term exclusions end automatically, and “indefinitely” can be ended after 12 months at the earliest.
Where can I turn if I have a gambling problem?
You can call Stödlinjen on 020-819 100 or chat via their website. Stödlinjen takes calls both from players and from family and friends.
