How sister sites work

What are sister sites? They are gambling sites owned by the same group but presented as different brands. Each Swedish site is run by a licence holder with its own licence from Spelinspektionen (the Swedish Gambling Authority). The group decides which sites are siblings, while the licence holder decides how the bonus rule and your account work for you.
In this guide we untangle the three levels – group, licence holder and brand – with examples from the Swedish market. You will also learn how to find out for yourself who is behind a site, and which misconceptions about sister sites come up most often.
What are sister sites? Three levels to keep apart
If you want a short explanation of casino sister sites, think of it as a family tree. At the top is the owner, in the middle the companies that hold licences, and at the bottom the sites you actually visit.
| Level | What it is | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Group | The corporate group that owns the brands | LeoVegas GroupFDJ UnitedBetsson AB |
| Licence holder | The company that holds the Swedish licence and is responsible for the gambling | Roar Vegas Ltd (LeoVegas), Kaprifol Services Limited (Unibet) |
| Brand | The name and website you play on | LeoVegasUnibetMaria Casino |
The group
The group is the owner. LeoVegas Group, for example, has been a subsidiary of MGM Resorts International since 2022, and since the acquisition of Kindred, Unibet has belonged to the French company FDJ United. The owner can be based in a completely different country from Sweden without that affecting which rules apply to you.
The licence holder
The licence holder is the company that Spelinspektionen has licensed and that must comply with Spellagen, the Gambling Act, in its dealings with you. It is the licence holder that verifies your identity, makes sure your deposit limits are respected and is covered by the bonus rule. Many licence holders are registered in Malta, but the licence they hold is Swedish.
The brand
The brand is what you see: name, logo, colours and game selection. Two brands can look completely different yet have the same owner – and in some cases the same licence holder too.
Why does a group have several brands?
A group’s reasons are not always stated, but the brands can differ in focus. Within LeoVegas Group, the trade press describes Expekt mainly as a sports betting brand, while BetMGM launched in Sweden in October 2024. ComeOn Group added the Reviant brand in April 2026.
Another explanation for new companies appearing is the licensing rules. According to reports in the trade press citing Spelinspektionen, a Swedish gambling licence cannot be moved between two legal entities, not even within the same group. If a group wants to place a brand in a new company, that company has to apply for its own licence.
Players notice this. When Unibet, Otto Casino, Maria Casino and Storspelare were moved to their own licence holders during 2025 and 2026, players had to register again. In the same way, Betsson switched licence holder to Spin Nordic Ltd on 30 September 2026, according to industry media.
The licence holder decides the bonus rule
Chapter 14, Section 9 of Spellagen states that a bonus may only be offered or given on the first occasion a player plays any of the licence holder’s games. So what decides is the company with the licence, not the brand or the group.
This matters a great deal for sister sites. If two sites share a licence holder, a single welcome bonus applies to both. If they have different licence holders, each may offer you a welcome bonus. We have not found any ruling or guidance that explicitly concerns multiple brands; the interpretation is based on the wording of the law.
A clear example is Kindred’s old set-up. Until 2025, the Swedish sites shared a licence held by Spooniker Ltd, and in 2020 the company stated that it paid the welcome bonus once regardless of which of its websites the customer registered on. Today every FDJ United brand has its own licence holder. At evoke, on the other hand, the 888 sites still appear to share a licence holder, 888 Sweden Limited. You can read more about how the rule is applied in our guide to bonus rules in Sweden.
What sister sites have in common – and what differs
It is easy to think that sister sites are the same casino with a different logo. It is rarely that simple. What they definitely share is the owner, and with it the overall decisions on strategy and technology. Exactly what is shared behind the scenes is not usually disclosed by the groups.
What differs is often more important for you as a player:
- The licence holder. It determines who your contract is with and how the bonus rule applies.
- The welcome offer. Terms such as wagering requirements, maximum stake and validity period are set per brand.
- The account. With different licence holders you have different accounts, with their own limits and their own history.
- The profile. Game selection, a focus on sport or casino, and the look all vary.
The basic protection, however, is the same everywhere, because it follows from the law and not from the group. Everyone offering online gambling under a Swedish licence must let you set deposit limits per day, week and month and must offer a self-test. Online casinos must also let you exclude yourself immediately for 24 hours.
Spelpaus and limits at sister sites
Spelpaus is the national self-exclusion register and applies to every operator with a Swedish licence. It therefore covers every brand of every licence holder, and so all sister sites. The exclusion applies to gambling online, in shops, at racetracks and on Vegas gaming machines.
The tools inside each site are a different matter. An exclusion you set with an individual operator applies to that operator, and you set your deposit limit with the licence holder you play with. So do not assume a limit carries over to a sister site with a different licence holder – set limits on every account you have. If you want to be sure the whole group is covered, Spelpaus is the right route.
How to check who is behind a site
You do not need any special tools to find out the ownership. Do this:
- Look at the footer. The licence holder’s name should appear there, often together with the licence’s period of validity.
- Look up the company in Spelinspektionen’s licence register. The register shows everyone with a valid licence and which websites the licence covers.
- Compare the licence holder’s name across the sites. The same company means the sites share one welcome bonus.
- Link the licence holder to a group via the group’s press releases or annual report.
The last step is not always easy. The link between Casumo’s licence holder Oddit Limited and Casumo Holding PLC is not stated in the sources we have reviewed, and Spin Nordic Ltd is not mentioned in Betsson’s 2025 annual report. We report such gaps openly in our overview of casino networks in Sweden.
Examples: how the groups look in Sweden
The table shows how some of the large owners have organised their Swedish brands. The information is as of October 2026.
| Group | Swedish brands | Do the brands share a licence holder? |
|---|---|---|
| LeoVegas Group | LeoVegasGoGoCasinoExpektBetMGM | No, four different licence holders |
| FDJ United | UnibetMaria CasinoOtto CasinoStorspelare | No, since the move in 2025–2026 (previously one shared licence) |
| evoke | Mr Greenthe 888 sites | The 888 sites share a licence holder; Mr Green has its own |
| Betsson AB | BetssonNordicBetBetsafeJalla Casino | No, a separate licence holder per brand |
| ComeOn Group | ComeOnSnabbareHajperLyllo CasinoCasinostuganReviant | No, a separate licence holder per brand |
| Casumo | Casumo | No Swedish sister sites found |
Each row is based on licence holders’ names in footers, decisions by Spelinspektionen and the groups’ own information. If you want to see every brand with its licence holder and licence number, we have gathered them under casino sister sites.
Common mistakes about sister sites
- Thinking a group may only give one bonus. The rule applies per licence holder. Sister sites with different licence holders may each give a welcome bonus.
- Thinking different names always mean different licences. The 888 sites are an example of several brands under the same licence holder.
- Relying on old lists. Both FDJ United and Betsson changed licence holders during 2025–2026, so older information may be out of date.
- Confusing a foreign company with a foreign licence. A company registered in Malta may well hold a Swedish licence.
- Thinking an exclusion at one site is enough. Your own exclusion applies with that company. Spelpaus applies to all.
Always play within the limits you have set in advance. If your gambling feels hard to control, you can exclude yourself at spelpaus.se or call Stödlinjen, the helpline, on 020-819 100.
Frequently asked questions
What are casino sister sites?
Sister sites are gambling sites owned by the same group but trading under different brands. Each Swedish site is run by a licence holder licensed by Spelinspektionen. Several brands can share a licence holder, but today most of the large groups have a separate company for each brand.
Can I get a welcome bonus at several sister sites?
The bonus rule in Spellagen applies per licence holder. If the sister sites have different licence holders, each may offer you a welcome bonus, but if they share a licence holder a single bonus applies to all of them. Check which company is named in the footer before counting on an offer.
Does Spelpaus apply to all sister sites?
Yes. Spelpaus covers every operator with a Swedish licence and therefore every brand of every licence holder. If you exclude yourself via spelpaus.se, it also applies to the group’s other sites.
How can I see who owns a casino?
Start with the footer, where the licence holder’s name should appear. Then look up the company in Spelinspektionen’s licence register, which also shows which websites the licence covers. The link between licence holder and group is often stated in the group’s press releases or annual report.
Do sister sites share accounts?
You cannot assume so. When FDJ United moved its Swedish brands to separate licence holders during 2025 and 2026, players had to register again at each site. Expect a separate account, separate limits and separate terms for each licence holder.
